This Southern Sweet Potato Casserole is a rich and comforting holiday classic. Made with creamy, mashed sweet potatoes, a touch of warm spices, and topped with either crunchy pecans or gooey marshmallows, it’s the perfect side dish for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any special gathering.

Ingredients

For the Sweet Potato Filling:

  • 4 large sweet potatoes (about 4 cups mashed)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs

Marshmallow Topping:

  • 2 cups mini marshmallows

Directions

Step 1: Cook the Sweet Potatoes

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into chunks. Boil in a large pot of water for 15-20 minutes, or until fork-tender. Drain well.
  3. Mash the sweet potatoes in a large mixing bowl until smooth.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling

  1. Stir in melted butter, sugar, brown sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until creamy and smooth.
  2. Spread the mixture evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

  1. For Pecan Streusel: Mix flour, brown sugar, pecans, and melted butter in a bowl. Sprinkle over the sweet potato mixture.
  2. For Marshmallows: If using, add mini marshmallows on top.
