Easy Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes are a classic Southern dish with a crispy, golden crust and a tangy, juicy center. Perfect as an appetizer, side dish, or snack, these fried green tomatoes pair well with a creamy dipping sauce like ranch or remoulade.

Ingredients

  • 3 large green tomatoes, sliced ¼-inch thick
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil (for frying)

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Tomatoes

  1. Slice the green tomatoes into ¼-inch thick rounds.
  2. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper and let sit for 5-10 minutes to draw out moisture. Pat dry with a paper towel.

Step 2: Set Up the Breading Station

  1. In the first bowl, place flour.
  2. In the second bowl, whisk together eggs and buttermilk.
  3. In the third bowl, mix cornmeal, breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.

Step 3: Bread the Tomatoes

  1. Dip each tomato slice into the flour, then into the egg mixture, and finally coat with the cornmeal-breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to adhere.

Step 4: Fry the Tomatoes

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat (about 350°F/175°C).
  2. Fry the tomatoes in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Remove and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch, remoulade, or spicy mayo.
